NEWINGTON, NH -- As a result of a Mother’s Day promotion, Planet Fitness donated more than $213,000 to breast cancer research.

For every new member that signed a membership May 3-10 at participating Planet Fitness locations, a $10 donation was made to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

“The Mother’s Day promotion was an awesome way to give back to the community,” Sharon Lomasney, a Planet Fitness franchisee, said in a company press release. “So many lives have been touched and affected by breast cancer. Everyone was very receptive to this cause, and I hope we commit to a pink shirt event at least once a year.”

One hundred eighteen Planet Fitness clubs participated in nine markets nationwide: Boston; Las Vegas; New York; San Antonio; Orlando, FL; Biloxi, MS; and Providence, RI, along with clubs in Maryland and New Hampshire. Planet Fitness gained more than 21,000 new members during the weeklong $10 down, $10 a month promotion.

“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is thrilled to accept this donation to help fund clinical and translational research worldwide,” Myra Biblowit, BCRF president, said in the release. “Partnering with Planet Fitness to promote the importance of exercise was a natural synergy and underscores BCRF’s mission of prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. We are extremely grateful and look forward to working with Planet Fitness again.”
