PITTSBURGH -- The lawyer for three shooting victims of the LA Fitness tragedy on Aug. 4 in Collier, PA, has subpoenaed information from LA Fitness as well as several area police departments and a medical examiner’s office.

Henry M. Sneath is seeking detailed information about the club, including its security procedures and accidents and crimes at the facility, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Sneath represents shooting victims Lisa Fleeher, Ashley Ferragonio and Jackquilyne Gallagher. All three were among the nine wounded in the rampage. Gunman George Sodini also killed three women before turning the gun on himself.

Sneath has sued Sodini’s estate, valued at $225,000, but has not added LA Fitness as a defendant, the newspaper reported. Sneath says he is conducting a civil investigation to see if anyone could have prevented the shootings or if LA Fitness is liable in any way.

“The goal of the moment was to generate subpoenas and use them to further our investigation,” Sneath told the newspaper. “We couldn’t even get a police report or a coroner’s report without a subpoena.”

Sneath wants to learn more about the situation involving the lights in the aerobics room. Sodini shut off the lights prior to going on his rampage. It was reported that during an earlier visit someone at the club showed Sodini how to turn off the lights. It is not known whether that individual was an LA Fitness staff member or a member of the club. According to the Post-Gazette report, Sneath has asked LA Fitness to turn over or preserve the actual light switch that Sodini used in the aerobics room.

In addition to LA Fitness, subpoenas were also served to the Allegheny County (PA) Police, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office and Collier police. The subpoenas seek all paperwork, photos, medical records, computer data and witness statements connected to the shootings, the newspaper reported.

Sneath said his clients are still recovering from the shootings and face medical and additional surgical procedures.

“They’re all, I think, pretty well traumatized but trying to get their lives back to normal,” he told the newspaper.

The LA Fitness club reopened to members on Aug. 22 and to the general public on Aug. 24.
