A trainer at an LA Fitness in New Jersey who obtained his certification while in prison has been charged with harassing a female member of the club.
Andrew Reyes, of Newark, NJ, was charged on Feb. 7 with the harassment of a 24-year-old woman at an LA Fitness in Clifton, NJ, the Clifton Journal reported.
The newspaper also reported that a Clifton police detective learned during the investigation that Reyes obtained his personal trainer certification in federal prison before he was released last October. Information on why Reyes was in federal prison was not known, the newspaper reported, although Reyes had also served time in the Essex County (NJ) Jail in 1997 for making terroristic threats, resisting arrest and weapons possession.
The member had felt uncomfortable working with Reyes in the past—Reyes had texted her and propositioned her—but she did not report him until Jan. 31 after he allegedly grabbed her by the hips and kissed her on the chest following a session, the newspaper reported.
Reyes no longer works at the LA Fitness, an employee confirmed today. LA Fitness had told police that Reyes answered “no” on his job application asking if he had ever been convicted of a crime, according to the report.
