Executives at In-Shape Health Clubs, Stockton, CA, plan to remodel most of the company’s clubs throughout California during the next year as it also begins construction on two new locations, the 30-year-old company announced.

Every year, company executives walk through all of their facilities to identify areas of improvement, but the changes being made in the next 12 months are designed to set In-Shape apart as the foremost destination for fitness and fun in the state, a release from the company stated.

“We’re making these enhancements because we want our members and their families to have a safe, healthy, fun place to go any day of the week,” Paul Rothbard, In-Shape’s CEO, said in the release. “As our members work to improve themselves, so do we. We strive to provide the best that the industry has to offer in every market we serve.”

Upgrades may include new equipment, new flat-screen TVs and artwork on walls; more windows to let in sunlight; modernized flooring, sound systems and other décor items; upgraded group exercise studios and new group classes. More extensive remodels at select locations may involve expanding cardio areas, adding indoor and outdoor pools, or otherwise adding amenities that members or the community have requested.

The first round of improvements is scheduled to begin within the next 30 days.

The company also has begun construction on two new clubs. Once open, the company’s total number of clubs will stand at 49. One of the clubs will be the company’s first in Ridgecrest, CA, while the other is its third in Orcutt, CA.

The company has also been in construction on three other facilities this year in California, including facilities in Suisun City, Bakersfield and Carmel.

In addition to new construction, the company was busy in 2011 purchasing clubs. In April, In-Shape acquired Ultimate Fitness in American Canyon, CA, for an undisclosed sum. In May, In-Shape purchased Elite Fitness in Salinas, CA, also for an undisclosed sum. While In-Shape builds a new space next door to the Elite Fitness location, members are using the Elite Fitness space, which has been upgraded with new equipment, flat-screen TVs, child care services and more group exercise classes. The new facility is expected to be completed this winter.
