At the Bash for Augie’s Quest last month, U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin (right) presented Augie Nieto (shown with wife Lynne) with the Surgeon General’s Medallion, which is awarded for actions of exceptional achievement to the cause of public health and medicine. Photo by Pamela Kufahl.
The 30th annual International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) show, held last month at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, was packed with a variety of activities for the more than 10,400 industry professionals, including 7,000 convention and trade show attendees.
One of the highlights of the IHRSA show was the Bash for Augie’s Quest, a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s research initiative. Life Fitness founder Augie Nieto, the event’s “chief inspiration officer” who six years ago was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease, posted on his Facebook page that this year’s event raised $1.3 million for ALS research, bringing the six-year total raised by Augie’s Quest to more than $28 million.
The show’s keynote speakers were authors Daniel Pink and Patrick Lencioni, Zappos founder Tony Hsieh, “The Amazing Race” host Phil Keoghan and U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, who also introduced Augie and Lynne Nieto at the Bash and appeared at Zumbathon, which raised $30,000 for Augie’s Quest.
Next year’s IHRSA show will be held March 14-17, 2012, in Los Angeles in the L.A. Live sports and entertainment district, which includes the Los Angeles Convention Center.
