A man has died of cardiac arrest after police officers used a Taser to subdue him following his rampage at a Gold’s Gym in Latham, NY.
Thirty-two-year-old Chad Brothers of Troy, NY, reportedly went into a rage at the Gold’s Gym shortly after he arrived around 5:45 a.m. on Monday morning. He fell off an elliptical machine, sped up another member’s treadmill before punching him in the face, toppled 700-pound machines and threw around 45-pound free weights, according to numerous reports.
After destroying other equipment, Brothers threw some boxes at a female police officer who had told him to get on the ground. The officer then knocked Brothers down with a jolt from a Taser.
While other officers were trying to cuff Brothers, he continued to struggle before he was shocked again. Two officers used their Tasers, and one hit Brothers with a baton. After he was subdued with the help of two or three members of the gym, Brothers went into cardiac arrest. He died shortly after arriving at Albany Medical Center around 7:15 a.m., according to reports.
None of the injuries suffered by the Gold’s Gym member and the police officers required medical attention.
An autopsy scheduled for this morning was to include screenings for steroids and other drugs. Police also had obtained a warrant to Brothers’ apartment.
Dave Reiseman, vice president of communications for Gold’s Gym International, Irving, TX, says the owner of the Gold’s Gym is working with police to provide any information during its investigation.
