Health club happenings across the nation
Northeastern club giant Town Sports International (TSI) has teamed with Weider Publications Inc., publisher of health, fitness and active lifestyle magazines, to produce a custom magazine to be distributed to TSI members. This new, quarterly fitness magazine, entitled Strong, debuted in the fall and reaches approximately 300,000 club members in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The magazine will be polybagged with one of two Weider titles — Shape, a women's lifestyle magazine, or Men's Fitness — and will include delivery to these magazine's existing subscribers, including those who are not TSI members.
In the second quarter of 2001, Bally Total Fitness's net income was up 21 percent over last year's second quarter figures for a total of $19.2 million. Net revenues came in at $281.3 million, an increase of 11 percent from last year, and operating income went up 8 percent to $34.1 million. Additionally, Bally's earnings before taxes, interest, depreciation and amortization for the second quarter increased 10 percent over 2000 figures for a total of $52.1 million.
A new, 10,000-square-foot World Gym has opened in Colorado Springs. Designed by Fabiano Designs International (Montclair, N.J.), this upscale health club charges $90 a month for membership. “This club is the Ritz-Carlton of the health club market in Colorado Springs,” says World's managing partner Mike McNeese.
