SAN FRANCISCO -- Club One, San Francisco, has a new CEO. Robin Klaus took over the CEO role on July 1 after Jim Mizes, who had been with Club One for eight years, left.
Klaus had been serving as the company’s chairman of the board, where he drove the board in terms of strategy, finance and shareholder communications. He will continue as chairman in addition to CEO.
Klaus was formerly chairman of Planet Fitness, a club company in Singapore. Prior to that, he was president and chief operating officer of Star Trac, and he was chairman of American Sports Institute, a nonprofit educational organization. He is on the board of directors of Napa Sonoma Summer Search, a mentoring program for teenagers.
“I will miss Jim Mizes on many levels, particularly his steadfast commitment, many contributions and passion,” Bill McBride, COO of Club One, told Club Industry. “Robin Klaus is a long-term industry veteran who has been an integral part of the organization’s leadership since the company’s inception and knows the company inside and out. Jim will be missed a great deal by all who know and have worked with him. We have undergone multiple changes within the organization that will make us stronger and more prepared for future growth and opportunities.”
Club One did not disclose the reason for Mizes’ departure, but Klaus said in a release from the company: “Jim Mizes is one of the most respected value-driven leaders this industry has ever known. Over the last eight years, he has aligned our business channels for optimal growth and created a culture dedicated to our mission of supporting meaningful change in people’s lives. He is responsible for putting in place a strong, integrated leadership team that will allow us to build on the path of success and momentum that Jim has helped pave.”
Mizes said in the same release: “My departure from Club One is part of our company adapting to the changes in our economy, opportunities and marketplace. I will continue to add value to growing organizations in my future endeavors, and I leave knowing that Club One is in good hands with an experienced, innovative and dedicated leadership team who is passionate about serving our members, clients and partners. Club One’s commitment to excellence in each channel’s business operations and to its behavioral-change technology will lead Club One to further success.”
Founded in 1991, Club One operates 14 Club One Fitness branded clubs in Northern California and five Frog’s Fitness branded clubs in Southern California, Club One also manages more than 60 corporate fitness centers, community centers, multi-tenant business parks and municipalities serving more than 140,000 members nationwide.
