  • In May, Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club, Greenwood Village, CO, broke ground on its expansion project, which includes adding 2,400 square feet to its weight room on the first floor and increasing its business office an additional 2,400 square feet on the second floor. The club will also be remodeling 7,200 square feet of the existing weight room and stretching area and approximately 2,000 square feet of the business and membership office.

  • Renaissance Hotels & Resorts opened the Renaissance ClubSport Aliso Viejo Hotel & Fitness Resort, the first full-service hotel in Aliso Viejo, CA, and the brand's second Renaissance ClubSport property. This boutique-style Southern California hotel and sports and fitness resort has 174 guestrooms, including five suites, a 75,000-square-foot fitness facility and 5,500 square feet of meeting space. It is managed by Marriott for Leisure Sports Inc. and R.D. Olsen.

  • The YMCA of the USA recently partnered with Kellogg's Corporate Citizenship Fund to award $10,000 grants to Ys located within 25 miles of a Kellogg company manufacturing location. As a result, a total of 24 Ys were awarded funds to provide underserved youth with physical activity opportunities. The Kellogg's Opportunity to Play grants will be used in Ys for a variety of programming: physical education classes in schools where there has been none, the development of basketball and swim leagues with and for Sudanese immigrants, and extended after-school programming that emphasizes active play.

  • Mike Maynard has become the latest executive to leave 24 Hour Fitness. Maynard, who recently served as a 24 Hour regional vice president, was hired by Global Fitness Holdings, which owns and operates 28 Urban Active Health and Fitness Clubs in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee, as its new senior vice president of sales for its southern division. Bill Robinson, senior vice president of sales, will manage the northern division of the company. Both Maynard and Robinson will report to new Global Fitness Holdings Chief Operating Officer Martin Stein. Maynard has also held key roles with Gold's Gym, World Gym and Jim Bottin's Fitness.

  • Marines and sailors with Headquarters and Service Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, celebrated Independence Day by competing in a 5-mile run in Fallujah, Iraq. The 14 service members started the run early in the morning to beat the day's quickly rising heat. After the event, the participants cooled down and stretched, then received a certificate of completion.

  • Nicki Anderson was named the IDEA Health & Fitness Association Personal Trainer of the Year. The award recognizes an IDEA member who is a practicing professional in the fitness industry and displays exceptional leadership, business management, motivational and instructional abilities, and who has inspired his or her clients toward greater personal growth and a higher fitness level. Currently the owner of Reality Fitness, a private personal training studio in Naperville, IL, Anderson has been a certified personal trainer for 17 years, has written two books on fitness-related topics and has authored numerous articles for industry magazines.

  • The Thoreau Club/Camp Thoreau Inc., a family-owned business based in Concord, MA, won the 2008 Marshall Paisner Massachusetts Family Business of the Year Award. The Thoreau Club was one of three Massachusetts-based companies recognized for its achievements in the community and business success. The award is presented to companies that exhibit positive business practices and have significantly contributed to their communities.
