SAN FRANCISCO -- Gold's Gym CEO James Weaver announced a new concept club program at a franchisee press conference on March 17 during the IHRSA 2009 Convention and Trade Show. The smaller box concept clubs will be 8,000-square-foot and 12,000-square-foot facilities designed to include custom add-ons targeted toward the club's demographic market.

The modular clubs were designed to be put together for a lower capital investment, the company said, and can be enhanced with pre-packaged, pre-negotiated add-ons. These add-ons include small cardio cinemas, cycling, tanning and juice bars.

Joel Tallman, Gold's vice president of operations and franchising, said discussions for 40 new concept clubs already are under way, though the idea was just announced this week.

The company also debuted a partnership with software maker Ubisoft to release a Gold's Gym branded cardio Wii workout that will be available March 31 at locations such as Best Buy and Amazon.com.

The interactive video games will include a seven day pass to a Gold's Gym facility, plus a chance to win a free one-year membership. Franchisees also may sell the game at their pro shops.
