SAN MATEO, CA -- The man who was found dead outside a 24 Hour Fitness Super Sport club in San Mateo, CA, on Sunday morning committed suicide, according to police who initially ruled the death as a homicide.
Jack Quon, a 24 Hour Fitness member from nearby Redwood City, sent a package containing a suicide note to a family member, San Mateo police say. Quon, whose wife gave birth to the couple’s fourth child on April 10, had severe financial problems, police added.
Quon had been stabbed—as was earlier reported—but police did not elaborate on whether that was the cause of death, although a weapon was recovered at the scene. The incident took place between midnight and 2 a.m. Sunday. Quon’s body was discovered in bushes next to a sport utility vehicle at around 8 a.m., and when police arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Due to this series of events, at this time, we will continue our investigation into Mr. Quon’s death as a suicide while we await the forensic and medical results on the examination performed,” San Mateo police Capt. Kevin Rafaelli said in a statement.
Earlier in the week, 24 Hour Fitness released a statement after Quon’s death.
“24 Hour Fitness is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our members,” the company said. “We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the member’s family and friends.”
