24 Hour Fitness Cardless Check-in

SAN RAMON, CA -- 24 Hour Fitness now has its cardless fingerprint check-in system in place at all its clubs throughout the United States.

Last week, 24 Hour rolled out the system in its clubs in Florida, the last state to have the system installed. Previously, 24 Hour installed the system in 16 other states.

Dan Benning, the north division president for San Ramon, CA-based 24 Hour, says 97 percent of the members who have been offered the option of the cardless check-in system have accepted. Those who do not wish to use the system still can check into the club with a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license. 24 Hour member cards issued in the past will no longer be used.

“Depending on the club and the number of members in that club, it takes us anywhere from 30 to 60 days to get everybody that wants to choose the option to sign up,” Benning says. “The number of members that are participating in the cardless entry option is well over 2 million.”

24 Hour members can now check into their clubs by having their fingerprint scanned and enter a 10-digit code of their choice, usually their phone number. Benning says 24 Hour does not keep members’ fingerprints on file.

“The reason we put it in place was we were listening to members, and they were looking for an easier way to get in and out of clubs,” Benning said. “We worked to find a solution that would meet that.”

Club Industry will take a closer look at 24 Hour’s new check-in system in the January issue.

In other 24 Hour news, the company opened its newest super-sport club in Irvine, CA, the 36th 24 Hour club in Orange County, CA. The 50,000-square-foot club includes an outdoor pool area covering about 9,500 square feet, complete with a lap pool and a kids’ splash pool.

On Saturday, 24 Hour expanded the Les Mills Bodypump group exercise program to an additional 100 clubs in Florida, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

And beginning today, in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, 24 Hour is inviting all non-members to work out at its clubs free of charge, and its current members can use any 24 Hour club regardless of their membership level. The promotion lasts through Sunday.
