Army Fitness

About 200 Army soldiers and their families participated in the 12th annual Aerobathon held in January at the Newman Fitness Center at Fort Stewart (GA) and Hunter Army Airfield. Designed to help people stick to their New Year's resolutions to lose weight, the event featured hip-hop dancing, kickboxing, step aerobics, Pilates, tai chi, belly dancing, salsa and Zumba moves. A nutritional counselor from Fort Stewart was on hand to provide counseling about healthy food choices, and a personal trainer offered consultations about effective workouts. Participants also could take part in a body-fat analysis or blood pressure readings.

Navy Fitness

To better assess post-deployment health among sailors in the Navy, commands can now access their deployment health assessments online. The Navy says if sailors complete their post-deployment health assessment several months after returning home, the view of their overall health may have changed. The post-deployment health assessment is designed to identify stress injuries and other health concerns that require further attention or treatment.

UFC

Mark Mastrov, the founder of 24 Hour Fitness who left the company in early 2008, now has a new venture in place. His private equity firm, New Evolution Fitness Co. (NEFC), is partnering with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts organization, to launch a nationwide and global network of UFC gyms.

Anytime Fitness

Anytime Fitness opened its 1,000th club on Jan. 30 in Nash, TX. Founded in 2002, the company currently has facilities in 46 states, plus Canada and Australia, serving nearly 600,000 members. During the past three months, Anytime Fitness has opened nearly 90 new clubs. The fitness chain plans to open more than 30 clubs in Canada this year, as well as the company's first clubs in Italy and India. It has sold franchise territory rights for another 1,500 clubs in the United States and expects to celebrate the opening of its 2,000th club next year.

Bally Total Fitness

Great American Insurance Co. (GAIC) filed a lawsuit against Bally Total Fitness, Chicago, on Jan. 27 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan. GAIC is suing Bally over more than $10 million advanced to Bally for directors and officers coverage in financial litigation. GAIC also is attempting to rescind the payment through an action in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, according to the Internet publication Law360. Bally spokesperson Larry Larsen says the case is without merit, and Bally will defend itself against GAIC's claims.

AEDs

The family of a New Jersey man who collapsed at a club and later died is suing HRC Management Inc., doing business as Hillsborough (NJ) Pool, Racquet & Fitness, for gross negligence after the club's staff did not administer an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the man. The lawsuit was filed last month in Superior Court in Somerset County, NJ. Thomas Durkin collapsed at the club on Jan. 8, 2007, after he went into cardiac arrest while playing racquetball, according to a report in the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger.
