SAN ANGELO, TX -- A Texas hospital is partnering with a nearby Y to outsource its recreational fitness services.
Shannon Medical Center, San Angelo, TX, last week signed a letter of intent to form a partnership with the San Angelo Y. The hospital says it is closing the Shannon Wellness Center to make more room for its cardio and pulmonary rehabilitation services, according to an article in the San Angelo Standard-Times. Currently, rehabilitation care shares the same space as Shannon’s fitness center.
The San Angelo Y is approximately 48,000 square feet and currently serves more than 4,200 members. Its floorplan is at least 10 times the size of the Shannon facility—large enough to accommodate the 30 percent of the hospital fitness facility’s current 800 to 1,000 members who are expected to move over to the Y.
Shannon will pay its current members’ joining fees and will also cover about half the cost of membership fees for its employees who wish to join the Y.
The new partnership is anticipated to begin on Jan. 1, 2011. Seven hospital fitness center staff members will lose their jobs as a result of the facility’s closure.
