The Club Industry East trade show visits Bean Town for the first time.

Club Industry East conference and trade show is starting the new millennium off with a fresh location. From June 21 to 24, Boston's World Trade Center will be overflowing with health and fitness professionals.

This year, CI East is offering its attendees more than 100 education sessions-two-thirds of which have never been presented at CI East before. And while the education sessions continue to be cutting edge, of particular interest this year is Club Industry's continuing "War on Obesity," sponsored by FitLinxx and Precor. As part of the magazine's special year-long focus on the alarming obesity trend, the show offers a series of seminars on how clubs can contribute to making Americans more aware of the dangers of being overweight-and making our indu-stry the catalyst for change.

In addition, CI East offers a special program, "Strength-Training Implemen-tation Program/Facility Tour at the South Shore YMCA," Tuesday, June 20 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., sponsored by Nautilus. Conducted by Dr. Wayne Wescott, fitness research director/national strength consultant, and Dr. Avery Faigenbaum, a leading authority on children's strength training, this information-packed day has a duel emphasis on education and motivation. For more information, call (800) 927-5007.

The trade show floor opens on Thursday, June 22 at 12:30 p.m. Expect to visit about 450 booths, representing more than 150 of the industry's top suppliers. These companies will highlight the latest equipment; nutritional products; software technology; lockers and locker room amenities; Internet opportunities; and much more.

With its usual flair, CI East starts off with a Welcome Reception on Wednesday, June 21, from 5:30-7 p.m. Feel free to be wined and dined while you are networking with some of the industry's most influential figures or just enjoy yourself while socializing with old friends. But don't worry about your waistline, because you can work off what you consumed at the reception during Early Morning Aerobics, Thursday, June 22 and Friday, June 23 from 7-7:45 a.m., where you can meet fitness legend Jack LaLanne. You'll also have the opportunity to try out the latest equipment offered by the industry's top manufacturers at Early Morning Workouts on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24 from 7-9 a.m.

This year CI East is also the home of the World Gym Eastern University Seminar, which will be held on Thursday, June 22 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Presented by Michael Scott Scudder, education director for World Gym International, "How to Prosper in a Highly Competitive Marketplace" is a multi-part workshop for owners, managers and staff of World Gym facilities. The seminar will include an examination of current trends, population markets and the best practices in the fitness industry; strategic positioning of a gym for maximum success in a local marketplace; pricing and program alternatives; and staff training tips to retain employees. To register for the World Gym Eastern University seminar, call (505) 751-4236.

As a special treat this year, Jack LaLanne will give the keynote address, "Why I'm Still Really 29: Shaping Motivational Messages Even the Inactive Can't Ignore," sponsored by FitnessAge, on Thursday, June 22 from 4:30-5:15 p.m. Get the word from a genuine American legend. To hear him speak is nothing less than phenomenal.

CI East is also proud to welcome members of NEHRSA (New England Health & Racquet Sportsclub Association). The show is the official Spring Conference and Trade Show this year for NEHRSA's 300-plus clubs and more than 1,100 members. A NEHRSA Member Reception (by invitation only) will be held Thursday, June 22 from 5:30-7 p.m.

And what would a trip to Boston be without a baseball game at Fenway Park? Come see one of the oldest rivalries in sports as the Red Sox take on the Yankees on Thursday, June 22 at 7:05 p.m.
