Fitness pro Scott Dennis honored at inaugural event raising funds, awareness

WICHITA, KS -- Drawing sports and fitness professionals from across the country, a first-annual golf tourney and dinner auction hosted by the Scott Dennis 44 Fund has raised $140,000 toward raising awareness and financial support for suicide prevention and grievance counseling.

The fund was founded as a legacy to Wichita native Scott Dennis, who played high school and college football, and had a successful fitness industry career prior to his death by suicide in 2012.

The June 7-8 dinner auction and golf tourney drew more than 350 guests, with speakers including Wichita mayor Carl Brewer and headliner Dennis McKinnon of the Chicago Bears, who spoke of the NFL’s focus on the role of brain injuries in suicide.  A two-time survivor of family suicides also told a personal story of tragedy and triumph.

Kidzcope, a Wichita-based grief center for children and families who have lost a loved one through death, was the event’s principal beneficiary.  At the dinner, Kidzcope received a $7,000 donation from fitness equipment brand Precor, along with a $20,000 donation from the 44 Fund.  Genesis Health Clubs and Precor made additional donations to a trust fund supporting Scott Dennis’ children.

The fitness industry was well represented, with attendees from Commercial Fitness Concepts, Cybex, HealthZone, Genesis Health Clubs, Life Fitness, Matrix, Precor, Sportsmith, Star Trac and StairMaster enjoying the golf tourney and auction featuring sports memorabilia and travel packages.

Event sponsors included Reality Check Sports and Alef’s Harley Davidson, with support from Commercial Fitness Concepts, Davis Moore Auto Group, and Genesis Health Clubs.  Nashville recording artists the Chris Weaver Band provided the evening’s entertainment.

In addition to raising funds, 44 Fund board members are becoming active in national and local suicide prevention efforts, speaking to school audiences across Kansas.   Contributions can be made via paypal, donate@sd44fund.com, or directed to Equity Bank, c/o 44 Fund/Scott Dennis Foundation, 555 North Webb Road, Wichita KS  67206.
