A woman was mugged and shot last week outside a 24 Hour Fitness club in Houston.
According to local media reports, the woman had just finished her workout in north Harris County, TX, and was heading to her car. She was approached by a man in the parking lot, and when she refused to give him her gym bag, he shot her in the side, took the bag and fled in a silver Honda Civic.
The woman was aided by bystanders after the mugging before an ambulance arrived.
"She was asking me to hold her hand and hug her, because I can tell she was cold and we were praying together, and another lady that was here, we were all praying together," Arthur Spencer told TV station KHOU 11.
According to reports, the 44-year-old woman suffered a punctured lung but was in good condition following surgery at a nearby hospital.
A 24 Hour spokesperson tells Club Industry that the company is supporting the Harris County Sherriff's office in its investigation and is referring all questions to that office.
"The safety of our members and team members is a top priority for 24 Hour Fitness," the company said in a statement. "We are deeply concerned to learn of an incident that took place in a parking lot near our club. Our thoughts are with the victim and her family during this difficult time, and we wish her a quick recovery. Out of respect for the victim's privacy, we cannot comment further on the situation."
KHOU 11 reported that 24 Hour has hired an armed guard to patrol the parking lot.
